General information
This course aims at presenting different aspects of harmful algae in marine waters and their effects on fauna, particularly on fish. Special emphasis on 1) Identification and quantification of fish-killing species using PCR and advanced microscopy, 2) Production and loss rates of fish killing algae; nutrient uptake, mixotrophy, and grazing by zooplankton, 3) Identification and quantification of implicated toxins and their modes of action, 4) Effects of fish killing algae on behaviour and physiology of fish.
A typical day will include 2-3 lectures in the morning, followed by hands-on demonstrations of methods and techniques, theoretical and practical exercises in the early afternoon. During late afternoon and the evening, students will carry out a project under expert supervision. These projects will be planned ahead of the course start as a collaboration between teachers and student groups.
