The STCW Convention reinforces new requirements for the management level at the management level. The level of management encompasses Second Class Machines Officers and Machine Heads. ENIDH's Master in Marine Engineering is indispensable for the training and certification of these officers.
The successful completion of the first year of the MSc in Marine Engineering (MEMM) meets the minimum requirements required to obtain certificates of competency for Officers of 2nd class machines and shipmasters of ships whose main engine has an equal propelling power or more than 3000 kW as required by STCW Code (Rule A-III / 2).

Escola Superior Náutica Infante D. Henrique (ENIDH) is the only Portuguese Maritime College and is located at Paço de Arcos, near Lisbon, Portugal. The College's mission statement is "educating and training officers for the Merchant Marine as well as other maritime related activities, such as port management and transportation and logistics". ENIDH has modern facilities which include several classrooms, laboratories and simulators, an indoor swimming pool, diving tank, row tank and a gymnasium. Other facilities include a canteen for students, teachers and staff personnel and a residence hall for 100 students. Nowadays, the school has approximately 60 teachers and about 700 students. About 40% of the teachers are marine officers that come to shore after some years of activity in the merchant fleet. ENIDH belongs to the Portuguese public higher education network and is under supervision of the Ministry of Education and Science. The College is certified by the Portuguese Maritime Administration and in 2008 implemented a quality management system which is certified by SGS. (ISO 9001:2008). The application of Bologna Declaration principles to all courses is a clear indicator of ENIDH's capacity to position itself as a European higher education institution.
