General information

The course is aimed to introduce the student on the fundamental notions and practical use of common data analysis techniques in Oceanography. The course is focused on three blocks: Stochastic processes, Time series and Spatial Series.

Probability concepts: porbability and stochastic processes, time series and spatial analysis. The course includes the resolution of theoretical and practical exercises with real oceanographic data and some elementary computer programming.

Programme information:

1. Probability and Stochastic Processes

  • Definitions
  • Distribution functions and probability density functions (PDF)
  • Bivariate processes: Correlation and Independence
  • Stationary stochastic processes and Ergodicity
  • Simple processes: AR and MA processes
  • Error Sources
  • Estimation and Central Limit Theorem
  • Principal components and Empirico-orthogonal functions (EOF)

2. Time Series Analysis: Spectral analysis

  • Theorethical basis: time and spectral representation
  • Discrete signals: Sampling effects
  • Methods of spectral estimation of radom series
  • Irregularly sampled series
  • Methods of spectral estimation of non-stationary series

3. Spatial Analysis: maps, spatial analysis

  • Elementary techniques: Polynomial Interpolation and Splines
  • Statistical objective snalysis: Error covariance model
  • Method of duccessive corrections:
  • Analysis through emprico-ortoghonal functions (EOF)
  • Alternative analysis
