General information
What is standard in botany or zoology, is not (yet) standard in microbiology: field trips to explore and count distinct groups of organisms. In this course, we want to explore the diversity of microbial populations in situ in various marine habitats like the water column and sediment, but also in more "exotic" habitats like epibionts of macroalgae or biofilms on stones. We will visualise the microbial cells by "phylogenetic staining" - fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) - and observe them in their natural environment. Which microbial groups live where? This is the question we want to address during the course.
The course consists of:
- lectures comprising background information about the FISH method
- hands-on experiences learning FISH
- field trips for sampling various habitats
We offer:
- small groups, competent lecturers
- project work
- excellent lab equipment on both Helgoland and at Bremen
You should:
- be in your master studies
- have basic skill in molecular biology, marine biology or microbiology
This year the entire course will take place on Helgoland.
