Biotechnology is defined as the industrial exploitation of living organisms or the exploitation of components derived from these organisms. Its practical applications include age-old techniques such as brewing and fermentation, which are still important today. In recent decades, gene modification has revolutionized the biotechnology industry, spawning countless new products and improving established processes. More and more types of fermentation are being used, and most new medicines are products of biotechnology. Modern biotechnology has become an applied area of science with a multidisciplinary approach embracing recombinant DNA technology, cellular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, as well as process design, engineering, modelling and control.
Biotechnology is a broad, multidisciplinary area of science. A Master of Science in Biotechnology is an expert in one (group of) discipline(s) and has to have sufficient knowledge and skills in other disciplines to cooperate with experts from the other disciplines. Therefore, students specialise during the Master programme and learn how to solve complex biotechnological problems in a multidisciplinary team. In Wageningen you can focus on six specialisations:
- Cellular and Molecular biotechnology: focus on life sciences / biological sciences
- Process technology: focus on design of technical steps in industrial processes
- Food biotechnology: focus on food applications
- Medical biotechnology: focus on development and production of vaccines, drugs and diagnostics
- Environmental and biobased technology: focus on application of renewable resources, production of bio-energy and removal of waste and byproducts
- Marine biotechnology: focus on application of marine organisms like algae and sponges in biotechnological processes
Specialisation Marine Biotechnology
Focuses on the use of newly discovered organisms from the sea in industrial processes. Applications include productions of new medicines, fine chemicals and renewable energy. Students will follow one year of courses, some compulsory and other optional. In the second year of the MSc, students will perform 2 research projects: one major thesis and one internship or 2nd thesis.

The first job after graduation, obtained by Msc biotechnologist, is often localised at a research institute or an university in- or outside The Netherlands. It usually concerns a research project or, more detailed, a PhD project: more than 50% of the graduated biotechnologist becomes PhD. Although most graduates choose for a career in science about 1/3 also starts in functions as engineer or technical expert.

Prerequisites:
Students who want to enrol the MSc programme of Biotechnology at Wageningen University must have:
- At least a BSc degree of equivalent in biotechnology, (molecular) biology, biochemistry, life sciences, chemical engineering, environmental technology or a related study
- A Grade Point Average (GPA) for this BSc of at least 70% of the maximum grade
- Proof of English proficiency as stated below
- Good skills in mathematics
- Basic computer skills
Education in English
Admission to the MSc Biotechnology requires a certain level and knowledge of the English language. To get admission to the MSc programme you will have to proof that your English is sufficient. The standard level English as defined by Wageningen University is always sufficient. Thus, for the programme a TOEFL with a minimum score of 550 points is required. Other official international tests are also accepted (see admission at WU). Additionally, the following minimum marks of the Dutch high school are also accepted: VWO – 6; HAVO- 7. Alternatively, Wageningen University offers an own test (Quick Placement test) for those who can travel to Wageningen before admission.
