General information
This MSc programme was established at IBERS in 2005 and is regarded as one of the best vocational MSc courses in the country. "IBERS is a world class research and education centre at Aberystwyth University. It is an internationally recognized centre of excellence and students' first choice for the study of biological, environmental and rural sciences.” It holds a significant international profile and attracts students from all over the world.
The programme is concentrated into one year and involves a core of key management skills with the opportunity to specialise in one of four designated pathways which lead to a range of highly regarded employability prospects in the environmental sector. The course is taught by internationally recognised researchers, consultants and professionals. Altogether they provide the students with world class experience and ensure that students make those all important links and career networks both in the UK and abroad.
The pathways are: Environmental Sustainability, Marine and Freshwater Biology, Bioenergy and& Environmental Change, and Habitat Restoration and Conservation. Students on the MSc automatically take the following common core modules as part of this course:
- Professional Skills in Managing the environment
- EIA Theory and Practice
- Statistics for Experimental Scientists
- Issues & Developments in Managing the Environment
- Introduction to Environmental Law
- Critical Evaluation in Environmental Management
They next specialize by selecting a pathway. The Marine and Freshwater Systems Pathway utilises the full range of aquatic habitats within the surrounding area and beyond to maximise the learning experience. Our students are provided with a range of vocational skills to enable them to enter professional employment in the marine and/or freshwater Environmental sector. The following modules are taken with this pathway:
- Sampling Techniques in Practice
- Management in Practice - Coastal, Estuarine and Wetlands
- Research Dissertation (over four months)
- Provision of top quality internationally recognised MSc training in Environmental Management with the unique opportunity to become a specialist through one of the designated pathways.
- Developing and expecting levels of professionalism and excellence in you so that you are able to enter and excel in the work environment.
- Industrial and research experiences and interactions integrated into the course so that you are able to develop a “vocational network for future success”.
- Your own personal tutor that will help you through the journey from learning to employment.

Good Undergraduate degree 2.2 (UK) (or above) equating to a mark of 56.5 or above in Biological Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Physical Geography or closely related discipline. European and International applicants can find their grade equivalence on our comparability page. Those who are not graduates must satisfy the University that they are of the required academic standard to pursue postgraduate study.
Language Requirements
If you have a Bachelor’s degree from a UK University, you do not need to take an English proficiency test. Non-native English speakers who do not meet this requirement must take a University-recognised test of academic English language proficiency. To begin this process students first apply for the core MSc in Managing the Environment. You do not have to select pathway at the start of the programme as you will be provided with ‘tasters’ of the various pathways and career advice to help you decide on the pathway of your choice. Postgraduate applicants can submit their application either on-line, through the UKPass online system, or off-line.
