General information

The exploration of resources such as hydrocarbons and hydrothermal deposits in the ocean have become increasingly important for the future security of resources. Furthermore, it plays an important role in the study of geodynamical processes and protection of the shores. Beyond that, the ocean is of great importance to the climate system of the Earth as a whole. The changes in the climate system in the past and present can be reconstructed with geoscientific methods. The insights about the dynamics of the system ocean-climate obtained in such a manner represent a basis for modelling calculations used for forecasting of the future climate(s).

M. Sc. "Marine Geosciences"  is an internationally oriented, state-of-the-art graduate program, which focuses on the latest developments in marine geosciences and technology, in particular in the areas marine coastal geology, past climates, biogeochemistry and paleoecology. This degree should provide students with the knowledge of fundamental terms of geological, biological, geochemical and physical processes in the ocean. One of objectives is to combine theoretical studies with applied research and hands-on experience. As a result of extensive marine sciences spectrum at the University of Kiel, the program offers an insight into modern research topics. The graduate will be able to create and critically assess scientific results and to plan, carry out and evaluate ship and laboratory projects independently.

The program is being conducted in intense collaboration with the highly research oriented Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences, IFM-GEOMAR. It is precisely this collaboration which facilitates interdisciplinary and sound professional education and serves to provide the students with qualifications to work successfully in companies, universities or in other public institutions both in Germany and abroad. Since marine research is a very international field, this program is designed as an international study program and all course are offered in English.

The courses offered can be subdivided into three categories, which modules are corequisit: core-courses, specialization and comprehensive courses. There are obligatory courses (69 credit points), which cover all aspects of Marine Geosciences (lectures and exercises) and will be completed by additional courses of the degree programs “Climate Physics” and ”Geophysics”. Furthermore the participation in marine or terrestrial field campaigns and  / or project oriented data evaluation are obligatory.

The program offers specializations in coastal geology, marine geochemistry, paleoclimate research and marine resources. It builds upon the basic knowledge in natural and geological sciences as it is provided in a B.Sc. in Geosciences. In the master's program the necessary qualifications for independent processing of scientific problems will be acquired, whereas the synergy of data acquisition, processing and interpretation, at see and in the lab, as well as the numerical simulations and modelling with application of geo-information systems is in the foreground.

Learning outcome:

Career prospects. A finished Master's degree in Marine Geosciences should enable the alumni to take jobs in industry and administrative authorities both in Germany and abroad. There is also a global demand for graduates with marine geoscientific expertise in the field of academic research due to the growing need for understanding ocean's role in Earth's system and climate change. The international focus of the program will give the graduates an advantage and a chance to successfully compete for positions worldwide.
