General information

The Master of Science in Maritime and Air Transport Management prepares its graduates for the challenges faced by transport companies today, enabling people in the transport sector to upgrade their knowledge and abilities through state-of-the-art specialist courses, combined with general management training.

Students can choose one of the three majors: Air TransportMaritime Transport or Transport Research. This enables them to tailor their programme to their specific interests and background. Courses are taught using a wide variety of teaching methods and styles to create a challenging and stimulating learning environment. Teaching methods include structured lecture programmes, seminars, case studies, project work, guest lectures by eminent external speakers and visits to organisations which are pioneers in the managing and planning of transportation systems.

The Master of Science in Maritime and Air Transport Management is specifically designed with an international audience in mind. It is aimed at individuals with a background in economics or management focusing on transport-related matters and who wish to develop their skills in these areas with a view to career advancement. The programme targets on the one hand executive staff members from transport-related organisations who want to become top-notch executives. On the other hand it is also of great value for students who would like to pursue a career in transport research.

Major in Maritime Transport. The major Maritime Transport is intended for students wishing to develop or to deepen their knowledge in the maritime transport sector. It offers an excellent opportunity for a carreer in the port sector, maritime industry, shipping lines and agencies. Students who chose to major in Maritime Transport, will attend specialization courses on maritime and port management in the second semester.

Major in Air Transport. The Major Air Transport is intended for students wishing to develop or to deepen their knowledge in the air transport sector. It offers an excellent opportunity for a carreer in the airport sector, air transport industry, airlines and agencies. Students who chose to major in Air Transport will attend specialization courses on air transport and airport management in the second semester.

Major in Transport Research. The Major Transport Research is intended for young university or college graduates wishing to pursue a more methodological and quantitative training in transport economics to enhance their future careers in research or business. It offers an excellent preparation for a career in for example consulting, policy or research. Moreover, it can lay the groundwork for further academic pursuits such as a PhD. Students who chose to major in Transport Research, will attend specialization courses on research-related topics in the second semester.

Learning outcome:

Students can apply to do a PhD at the Department of Transport and Regional Economics (TPR) of the Faculty of Applied Economics at the University of Antwerp. In order to qualify, it is recommended to have successfully completed the advanced Master in Maritime and Air Transport Management with the major Transport Research. However, a number of additional requirements and screening procedures apply.

<p><strong>Full-time programme</strong></p> <p>The 2016-2017&nbsp;programme fee for&nbsp;the&nbsp;programme amounts&nbsp;to 12,500 Euro.</p> <p>The first instalment (6,250 Euro) is due on&nbsp;31 July 2016 and the second one on 31 October 2016.</p> <p>The programme cost for students who successfully completed the&nbsp;major Air or Maritime and who have fulfilled the admissions criteria for the&nbsp;major Transport Research amounts to 6,250 Euro, which is due on 31 July 2016.</p> <p><strong>Part-time programme</strong></p> <p>If desired, the&nbsp;programmes can&nbsp;be spread over two academic years. This option has to be approved in advance by the Daily Management of C-MAT.</p> <p>The part-time programme&nbsp;cost amounts to two times 6,250 Euro (i.e. 6,250 Euro for the first academic year and 6,250 Euro for the second one). Prerequisites:

Admission will be granted by the admission board taking into account the application file of the student, academic background, motivation, language skills and if applicable professional experience. One of the basic entry requirements for the programme is a university or college degree (comprising a 4-year minimum full-time programme) in a relevant subject (applied economics, law, business or civil engineering, commercial sciences, political sciences, maritime sciences or nautical sciences, …) and a thorough knowledge of English.

Degree Requirements
A university or university college degree (minimum 4-year full-time programme) in a relevant subject. Additional selection criteria include relevant work experience (preferably 2 years minimum) and career objectives.

Language Requirements
All applicants must be able to read, follow lectures and express their thoughts in fluent written and spoken English. For students whose first language is not English, the following minimum qualifications will meet the English language requirement for entry:

  • TOEFL: paper-based test (PBT) 550; computer-based test (CBT) 213, nternet-based (iBT) 80 score;
  • IELTS: 6.5;
  • Princeton Test: satisfactory standard in the verbal section;
  • Equivalent tests from accredited language testing organizations;
  • A first degree from a European university/college or overseas institution which provides adequate evidence of the proficiency in the English language;
  • Other evidence that proves your proficiency in the English language and which satisfies the Admission Board.

Application Procedure:
  1. Phase 1 – The candidate fills out the application form via the online application tool and uploads all required documents. (Application deadline: 31st of May 2016, European residents without visa requirements can apply until August, 31th 2016)
  2. Phase 2 – Based on the applicant’s dossier, the Admission Board makes a decision regarding the admission of the candidate (approved/denied) (every 2 weeks)
  3. Phase 3 - The applicant will be notified of the decision taken by the Admission Board within one week.

Grant Opportunities:

Candidates who need financial assistance should explore all sources of financial aid that may be available in their home country. The University of Antwerp and C-MAT do not offer scholarships. The Foreign Affairs office of the Government of Flanders offers  C-MAT 10 partial scholarships. During selection, priority will be given to candidates who are self-financed or sponsored by their organisations.

If you wish to apply for an external scholarship, please notify C-MAT well in advance.  Please note that some scholarships have special requirements and longer application procedures.

Candidates should be aware that accommodation and living expenses can vary considerably depending on personal lifestyles. The average monthly budget for one student amounts to 620 euros (including accommodation, insurance and health care).

Regulations:

The full-time programme covers a normal academic year and lectures/exams are scheduled from the first week of October to the end of June. Examinations are held in January and June, resit exams are scheduled in early July.

Courses are scheduled daily, from Monday to Friday. The graduation ceremony is held at the end of June.

The dissertation can be submitted in the first session (i.e. before the end of May) or in the second one (i.e. before the end of August) as well as during the next academic year.
