General information
This course will cover key aspects of ocean chemistry associated with the biogeochemical functioning of the planet and global changes of today and the past, with insight on the carbon cycle and its anthropogenic perturbation. We will do so by learning what kind of information can be extracted from paleoclimate archives (deep sea sediments, corals, ice..), and by focusing on specific problems such as the progressive acidification of the oceans due to the marine absorption of atmospheric CO2. It is intended that students learn to interpret, to critically read and draw new hypothesis of the scientific literature.
Programme information:
Day 1: The climate system: Natural archives of past environmental conditions
Day 2: Orbital forcing: Glacial – Interglacial variability; Abrupt changes and the thermohaline circulation.
Day 3: The marine carbon cycle in the past
Day 4: Ocean acidification; Modern trends of global change, the IPCC effort.
Day 5: Practical sessions: Discussion of recent scientific papers, practical exercises, internet resources, software
