General information

In this field course in Reykhólar/Westfjords participants will get acquaintance with firms that harvest seaweed extensively in Iceland. Students will visit a variety of companies that use marine algae in innovative ways, also in tourism. The course will keep focus on sustainable use of seaweed though other innovative ideas are welcome.

Holding an insight into the state of the art through lectures and visits to companies, participants will work individually or in groups on innovative ideas. Using the Business Model Canvas, participants will work towards a business model for each project. The exact schedule will be available here before the course starts.

Teaching of this course will take place in Reykhólar primary school. There is wireless internet connection. There is an excellent little swimming pool just 200 m away. The teaching facilities will be accessible all day. Part of the course comprises visits to companies in the area, as well as analysis of algae on the beach and tidal flats.

Learning outcome:
  • understanding of challenges in sustainably harvesting marine biomass;
  • familiarity with ways to develop an idea for innovative and sustainable business projects within biomass production/harvesting, leading to a business plan.

The course will be held in Reykhólar, where the most intensive harvesting of algae in Iceland takes place. Reykhólar is a little community in the inner Breiðafjörður with approximately 200 inhabitants.

Cost:
<p>Course fee: ISK 10.000.&nbsp;Coffee, cakes and light refreshments in the evenings are included in the course fee. Other meals (lunch, breakfast) are not included.</p> <p>UW has reserved rooms at the local boarding school. Participants have to book their accommodation (five nights) themselves by emailing <a href="mailto:skrifstofa@reykholar.is">skrifstofa@reykholar.is</a>.&nbsp;A special price to participants of this course is ISK 2.200 in double rooms, breakfast included.</p>

Prerequisites:

Applicants have completed a university degree, which may be a B.A., B.S., B.Ed. or other comparable degree. It is also important to have a good command of English.
