General information
This field course in the southern Westfjords of Iceland will explore blue/green economy or entrepreneurship in marine aquaculture in arctic and sub-arctic regions. Students will get an insight into the state of the art through lectures and visits to companies.
The curriculum will focus on today’s limitations and challenges, an introduction to sustainable resource use and innovative management. Participants will then work individually or in groups on a range of ideas, leading to a business model according to the ‘Business Model Canvas’ for each project. The exact schedule will be available here before the courses start.
Teaching of this course takes place in an old schoolhouse, Dunhaga, on the grounds of Tálknafjörður’s large open-air swimming pool; roughly 900 m from the village centre. Dunhaga houses a large classroom, as well as facilities for individual work and group work. The building, with internet connection, will be accessible all day. Part of the course is made up of visits to companies.

- María Maack, biologist and specialist in Ecological Economics.
- understanding of contemporary challenges in marine aquaculture;
- familiarity with ways to develop an idea for an innovative and sustainable project within aquaculture and make a business plan.

Venue
Tálknafjörður, Iceland
The course will be held in Tálknafjörður, where most aquaculture companies in the Westfjords are located. Tálknafjörður is a small fishing village of roughly 250 inhabitants.

Cost:
<p class="rtejustify">Course fee: ISK 10.000. Coffee, cakes and light refreshments in the evenings are included in the course fee. Lunch is not included.</p> <p class="rtejustify">UW has reserved double rooms at Guesthouse Bjarmaland. Participants have to book their accommodation (five nights) themselves. Guesthouse Bjarmaland offers a special price for course participants, ISK 4,870 per night, breakfast included.</p>
Prerequisites:
Applicants have completed a university degree, which may be a B.A., B.S., B.Ed. or other comparable degree. It is also important to have a good command of English.
