General information

This course is primarily aiming to attract PhD-students who are interested to gain more knowledge in taxonomy and systematics of marine invertebrates. This course will help the students to understand similarities and differences between selected invertebrate taxa and get more insight in some problematic groups. The venue of this course will be the marine station at Sven Lovén Center for Marine Sciences Kristineberg at the Gullmarsfjord, Sweden, during two weeks in September/October 2014.

In particular, this course will focus on the fauna of Skagerrak. For the selected phyla in the schedule, the students are expected to have read in advance the corresponding chapter in Brusca & Brusca. For each read part of the textbook by Brusca & Brusca (=phyla) there will be one day with lectures and discussions before lunch and after lunch will it be ”hands on” of material that been discussed before and earlier collected from the area of  Gullmarsfjord to exemplify and illustrate special details of the group of interest for each day. Each part (=day) will be led by a lecturer with special insight and knowledge of the group in question. This will give a unique possibility to both read a taxonomic/systematic book and the same time see selected representatives of that group under skilled supervision of experts within each taxon group discussed. Also will some lectures give insight to computerized taxonomy, field  expeditions for marine biodiversity research and an introduction to e-taxonomy resources and scientific applications.

The course can take a maximum of 16 students. This course is arranged in collaboration with the ForBio research school in biosystematics. A full list of PhD courses from the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Gothenburg is available here.

Learning outcome:

After completion of the course the Ph.D. student is expected to be able to have the knowledge and understanding of:

  • Understanding of the taxonomy, morphology, systematics and basic phylogeny of the invertebrates with emphasis on the diversity of Skagerrak waters
  • Sampling in the sea
  • A view of computerized taxonomy and electronic keys
  • Some knowledge of e-taxonomy resources and subsequent scientific applications

As some skills and abilities in:

  • Handle samples and examine the same
  • Use of keys
