General information
In this short course, the main focus is on the difference between alternative types of breakwaters and governing factors for their selection, the engineering design of breakwaters from conceptual to detailed and the preparation of layouts and detailed cross-sections.
Also the application of the submerged breakwater and the effect of construction of breakwaters on the adjacent coastline will be discussed. In order to achieve these goals, this course contains a real based exercise and participants will be asked to design the breakwaters of a port and defend their design in front of a group of experts.
Meanwhile an overview of the use of physical models in design of coastal structures including outline of the factors determining the design of scale models, reproduction of various hydraulic phenomena and scale effects will be given. Also in this course the physical structures and vessels used in the offshore industry will be reviewed.
Upon completion, the participant should be able to:
- Understand the difference between alternative types of breakwaters and governing factors for their selection; Design breakwaters from conceptual to detailed and prepare the layouts and detailed cross-sections.
- Have an overview of structures and vessels used in the offshore industry, their behaviour under conditions of winds, waves, currents, environmental loading.
- Understand the basic principles of scaling factors and know how to design a scale model to reproduce certain hydraulic phenomena.
The main goal of these two short courses is to familiarize the participants with the design of layout of a port as well as the port related structures in the port area or offshore such as breakwaters and berthing facilities.

Cost:

2.775€

Prerequisites:
You should at least have a Bachelor Degree in a relevant field of study, some years of working experience and a good command of the English language. This course is useful for engineers involved in the design of coastal structures specially breakwaters and/or the supervision of coastal structure projects. Knowledge about the coastal processes such as wind, waves, tides and tidal currents is necessary.
Application Procedure:
Apply using the online application form. Students will be registered as short course participants after payment of the required tuition fee.
Application Deadline: 29 January 2016
Grant Opportunities:
Most of the UNESCO-IHE short courses are eligible for NFP fellowship and candidates from NFP countries are always encouraged to apply for one (Deadline NFP: 14 October 2015). Discounts on the tuition fee apply to the following:
- 30% for UNESCO-IHE alumni
- 30% for UNESCO-IHE G-PoWER partners
- 10% for UN family staff members
- 10% for groups of 5 or more (provided that the course starts at the same time and a group application has been sent)
