General information

Recent advances in algal technology, mostly developed for biofuel production, open up possibilities for application to wastewater treatment and resource recovery. At the same time, in the developing world increasing volumes of wastewater go untreated, partly because available technologies are either costly, technologically too complicated or demanding too much land.

Algal technologies have the potential to be used for energy efficient, compact wastewater treatment in which by-products are generated for cost-recovery. Presentations during the seminar will address the potential and challenges of innovative technologies.

Main topics of the programme

  • State-of-the-art: applications at semi-full scale
  • Algal-bacterial systems for wastewater treatment
  • Potential algae-based resource recovery; nutrients and biofuels.
