General information
The Bremen International Graduate School for Marine Sciences (GLOMAR) hosts more than 100 Ph.D. students from all fields of marine sciences who pursue their Ph.D. project at the University of Bremen or at Jacobs University Bremen.
The GLOMAR research training programme is designed to ensure optimum conditions for doctoral candidates in pursuing their doctoral studies. It provides a unique discipline-specific and interdisciplinary training in the relevant natural and social sciences which ensures that all research postgraduates acquire the research skills and competencies necessary to complete their research theses and to continue their career in academia, industry or administration.
Supervision of each Ph.D. student is in the hands of a thesis committee that consists of the main supervisor, an independent senior scientist, a third scientist that could be the PhD student's immediate research advisor (often junior scientists such as assistant or junior professors, and postdocs), and if suitable, an external (international) scientist. The thesis committee advises the PhD student on all scientific and management aspects of the research project she/he is involved in and monitors the progress of the PhD student.
GLOMAR offers a broad range of training courses in five different categories: (1) Knowledge Base, (2) Basic Skills / Methods, (3) Specific Knowledge, (4) Transferable Skills and (5) Overarching Topics. More information about the course programme is available here. To complement the training programme, GLOMAR also closely cooperates with other graduate schools in the region. English is the primary language for all communication and classes.
Mobility and networking on an international level are an important part of a career in science. GLOMAR encourages its PhD students to spend a research stay or placement (internship) at another institution, preferably abroad. The graduate school offers financial support to its members for such a research stay for up to 6 months. Further financial support is available for participation in international conferences and workshops.
To foster interdisciplinary thinking and working, GLOMAR offers monthly research seminars which are guided by research associates from a similar field. These seminars offer the opportunity to meet other Ph.D. students and for a broad exchange about the research topics and all challenges that scientists may face during the period of their Ph.D. To account for the transition phase between the Ph.D. project and the future career, the graduate school offers different programmes and events for its members to help them make decisions and take the right steps. These measures include career fairs, fireside chats with professionals from industry, Meet&Greets with senior scientists, and a coaching programme for female scientists.
Ph.D. students from other countries who wish to spend some time at MARUM for a research stay, can apply for some support funding for up to 3 months. For further information about the research placement programme, please see here.

Grant Opportunities:
GLOMAR does not provide funding for Ph.D. projects. The graduate school offers support funding for two research placements per year for external Ph. D. students to do research at MARUM for a period of up to 3 months.
Regulations:
GLOMAR PhD students who successfully complete the research training programme, will receive a GLOMAR Certificate presented to them during a graduation ceremony. The GLOMAR Certificate is awarded to PhD students who obtained a minimum of 65 GLOMAR Credit Points (GLOMAR credit points do not equal ECTS credits).
