General information
Once again, the summer course on Marine Ecological & Environmental Genomics (12th edition) will take place at the Station Biologique de Roscoff (France), from June 5th to June 16th 2017.
Aims
Knowledge of marine genomics knowledge is crucial for understanding the marine environment and for an efficient use of its resources. New methods have revolutionized the field, spawning applications in basic research and environmental management. The course will give insight into population, environmental, biodiversity, comparative, evolutionary and functional genomics through lectures, case studies, and computer labs.
Target group
Advanced PhD students (at least in their second year) and junior postdocs with a solid knowledge in marine ecological and environmental genomics, phylogenetics and/or population genetics.
Context
The 13th edition of the MEEG Summer Course is sponsored by EuroMarine, the European marine science network (www.euromarinenetwork.eu) and EMBRC-France (www.embrc-france.fr/fr), the French node of the European Marine Bioresources Center (www.embrc.eu).
Topics
The course will consist of lectures, tutorials and computer based exercises on the following subjects.
Genomics - next generation sequencing, database searching, advanced skills in data handling and bioinformatics
Population genomics - diversity, structure, connectivity and gene flow, population dynamics, adaptive variation
Environmental genomics - environment, genome interactions, ecogenomics, metagenomics and metagenetics
Functional genomics - genome structure, molecular evolution at the functional level, genomic architecture, functional networks
Comparative genomics - whole genome comparisons, concatenated phylogenies, genome organization, annotating genomic information, co-evolution
Lectures and discussions on applications, a simulation exercise, site visit and local excursion are scheduled.
