Doctoral candidates in any discipline of marine sciences in Kiel can take part in our doctoral programme.
In addition to your primary supervisor you choose at least one co-supervisor. Your primary supervisor has to be a person with the faculty permission to supervise doctoral candidates. Co-supervisors may come from the university or from outside (e.g. NGOs, governmental agencies etc.). It can be anyone with a scientific background who is able to contribute to your project.
By applying to participate in the ISOS programme, you and your supervisors enter a supervision agreement that requires two supervisory committee meetings per year.
This supervision agreement aims at facilitating a supportive environment to doctoral candidates and their supervisors during doctoral research. It is part of the application for participation in the ISOS doctoral programme. The supervision agreement is compliant with the Principles for Doctoral Degree Regulations of Kiel University, passed by the University Senate in 2013 and implemented in the doctoral regulations of the faculties. This agreement should help all participants to navigate the doctoral phase in the best possible way. It gives best-practice suggestions that build on the cooperation and support of all partners in order to enhance research output within the system. The agreement is not a legally binding document but rather a joint statement of purpose.

- The ISOS is not bound to a particular faculty. Rules for graduation differ between faculties; please inform yourself at your faculty.
- There are different structures at Kiel University and GEOMAR which you may face during your doctorate - do not get confused and find more information here.

Doctoral Candidates in any discipline of marine sciences in Kiel can take part in the PhD programme. As an ISOS PhD you remain anchored in your faculty for all formal regulations.

Grant Opportunities:
ISOS does not currently offer PhD scholarships or positions. If you are interested in doing a PhD in marine sciences in Kiel, you will need to find a position with a senior scientsts. It offers however, financial support to its registered PhD candidates through:
- Travel funding (maximum 50%) for conferences, workshops and training events
- the possibility to apply for a "mini-proposal", a scheme whereby you can obtain, administer and conduct your own small research project.
