General information
One of the main objectives of MARUM is to train early career researchers to take on the diverse challenges of top-level research, including cross-disciplinary collaborations and science communication to a broader public.
The graduate school serves as a central platform for interdisciplinary training for doctoral students in marine sciences at the University of Bremen and its partner institutions. GLOMAR follows a threefold strategy to prepare young marine scientists for their future career:
- Educating the students to become excellent young scientists in their respective fields,
- Providing them with an interdisciplinary foundation and an international network, and
- Giving them the opportunity to improve their transferable skills
We offer a broad range of training courses, including introductory, expert, and transferable skills courses. To complement the training programme, GLOMAR also closely cooperates with other graduate schools in the region.
English is the primary language for all communication and classes.

Courses and Trainings
MARUM and its Graduate School GLOMAR offer a dedicated course programme for Early Career Researchers in marine sciences. We follow a defined MARUM standard of education which aims to provide excellent training opportunities.
A broad range of transferable skills trainings aim to foster self-responsibility and to provide competences that are needed in science and beyond. Basic and specific knowledge courses aim to fill potential gaps, provide deeper insights into the topic and into different research fields. Multi- and transdiciplinary thinking are an important aspect of our education concept and are promoted in all MARUM / GLOMAR courses.
With our educational activities, we closely cooperate with our partner institutions and welcome PhD students and postdocs from AWI, ZMT, MPI, ICBM and the University of Oldenburg in our courses. In turn, MARUM Early Career Researchers and GLOMAR members have the opportunity to participate in training courses offered at our partner institutions.
Career development for Early Career Researchers is a key objective of MARUM. To this end, a number of resources and programmes are offered to assist PhD students and Postdocs in reflecting on their career and to develop a career strategy.

Application Procedure:
PhD students employed at the University of Bremen or one of its partner institutions may apply for admission within the first 3 months of their PhD project.
The application must include the following documents:

- Curriculum Vitae
- Motivation letter (please include an explanation why you would like to become a member of GLOMAR)
- Description of your PhD project
- Letter from your supervisor confirming that (a) you have been selected in a competitive selection process, (b) the supervisor is willing to share your supervision with a thesis committee and (c) she/he agrees that you are expected to follow the graduate school’s curriculum
Please combine all documents into one single PDF and send it to glomar(at)marum.de.
Applications must be submitted within the first 3 months of the PhD project. This 3 months period has been defined to give the PhD students enough time to follow the GLOMAR curriculum and to secure early involvement of a thesis committee.
In exceptional cases, PhD students can be accepted after the three months have passed. However, PhD students are required to contact the GLOMAR programme manager to discuss their case.
PhD students from other graduate programmes (ArcTrain, INTERCOAST, ...):
GLOMAR welcomes all members of graduate programmes in marine sciences in Bremen, such as ArcTrain or INTERCOAST.
Applications from PhD students in other programmes must include the following documents:

GLOMAR makes available funds to support specific categories of graduate student professional development.
Regulations:
GLOMAR PhD students who successfully complete the research training programme, will receive a GLOMAR Certificate presented to them during a graduation ceremony. The GLOMAR Certificate is awarded to PhD students who obtained a minimum of 65 GLOMAR Credit Points (GLOMAR credit points do not equal ECTS credits).
